What Is SSL?

Short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. Another protocol for transmitting data securely over the World Wide Web is Secure HTTP (S-HTTP). Whereas SSL creates a secure connection between a client and a server, over which any amount of data can be sent securely, S-HTTP is designed to transmit individual messages securely. SSL and S-HTTP, therefore, can be seen as complementary rather than competing technologies. Both protocols have been approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as a standard.

How Do I Know If A Site Is Secure?

It is not necessary for every page in a site to be secured by SSL. It is very important however, that any page which transmits personal data via the internet be secured by SSL. The easiest way to check this is to look at the page address. For example... looking at the address of this page you will see it begins with "http:". This is fine for pages that do not transmit personal data. When you enter merchandise into your shopping basket and go to our Checkout page you will see the address begins with "https:" The addition of the "s" to the address signifies a secure page. Another way to tell is by looking for the padlock image that pop's up next to the address in your browsers address bar. If you can see this image you are in a secure area. Clicking on this padlock image will give your security information about the site. You will find that all of the pages within our site that collect and transmit personal information have this address and are secure.

Do you get sick and tired of all the junk e-mail floating around on the internet? We do! We consider your e-mail address to be every bit as confidential as your credit information.
